Antique milk can vesta (match holder) from the collection of Stephen Sondheim

Sorry, this item has sold.

I consider this antique brass and copper match holder in the shape of a milk can a treasure for several reasons. It is a charming looking piece that cleverly hides its purpose. Approximately 4" tall, on one side is a ridged copper diamond shape for striking the matches that are found under the lid. We know that Sondheim was a smoker back in the day. So were many of his illustrious friends. Consider all the possible people who could have picked this piece up, taken out a match and struck it to light their cigarette. Bernstein, Stritch, Prince...who knows? Also, cows were a part of Sondheim's work. There is the cow in "Gypsy." Also, Milky White plays a central role in "Into the Wood." This would be a delightful piece to own whatever its provenance, the fact that it was Stephen Sondheim's makes it a treasure.

10% of the proceeds from the sale of pieces in the "Treasures" category of Sondheim Selections will be donated to PBS. Over the years, broadcasting on PBS was the only way millions of Americans could experience the productions of Stephen Sondheim. It seems fitting to support PBS at this time, in this way.
