Antique French game pieces with bonus Doyle auction paddle from the Sondheim collection

$220.00

Shipping to United States: $20.00

We are offering five game pieces in individual brass and glass frames. Photos show the fronts and backs of the pieces. Almost 100 pieces came jumbled together in a box without any instructions or playing board etc. Judging from the content of the lithographed fronts and printed backs, the game appears to have been a French 19th century precursor to Trivial Pursuit and the old TV game show Concentration. The questions have to do with things and people and the snippets of images appear to cover the same kinds of subject matter. To give the pieces their appropriate presentation, each has been mounted in a 2-sided brass-edged glass frame with a hanging hoop at the top. The two game pieces in the shadowbox are fastened and you will not be able to see the questions on the back of those two pieces. The three free-standing framed pieces would make attractive decorations in various situations and certainly would be unique Christmas tree ornaments. Each of the pieces has a history lesson and story to tell. The pieces show some wear and the frames are hand made and so there is variation among the frames and the closure fit of the frame can be uneven. The auction paddle came from the historic June 18, 2024 auction at Doyle Auctions where the excitement was palpable as pieces from Stephen Sondheim's life smashed their pre-auction estimates. The paddle features the famous Hirschfeld caricature of Sondheim. The game pieces were part of lot 121 sold by Doyle from the Collection of Stephen Sondheim on November 14, 2014. They were originally offered on June 18 but they not paid for and so were offered again on November 14. You will receive a Certificate of Authenticity identifying the lot and sale date of the item.
